Climate Services Symposium for the Energy Sector

On the 5-6th March 2018, Eva Contreras, one of the members of the UCO team involved in CLARA Project, participated in the Climate Services Symposium for the Energy Sector, held at the prestigious French Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition in Paris. This is the second symposium in this line organized by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), funded by the European Commission and operated by the European Center for Medium-Range Meteorological Forecasting.
The new demonstrators ECEM and CLIM4ENERGY were showcased in the event. These innovative tools are intended to provide society with state-of-the-art climate and sector information on adaptation and mitigation of climate change. The use of this information, seasonal forecasts and climate change projections, is key for the energy sector to achieve a robust planning of the growing renewable energies demand, energy markets and risk management for the adaptation of the business to climate change. The pre-operational phase of the C3S ECEM demonstrator has been finalized, and the demonstrator now houses a large amount of climate and energy data, as well as documentation.
More than 60 entities of 14 countries (United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Turkey, Norway, United States, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Italy, Croatia) participated in the event, all of them of the energy arena (power companies, policy makers, academia). Attendees had the opportunity to connect with experts in the field of energy and climate, participate in practice sessions and learn examples of how the climate information that these services offer can improve the ability to cope with extreme weather scenarios.
