CLARA at Venice Climathon 2019 - Hackathon on Sustainable Mobility

Saturday 26th October, San Servolo Island, Venice

Climathon is a year-round programme, with a powerful solutions-hackathon at its core, translating climate action solutions into tangible projects, supporting climate positive businesses & start-ups and addressing local policy changes. Climathon empowers citizens, cities and local economies to come together to develop local solutions to cities’ climate challenges. Powered by dynamic and dedicated Local Organisers, Climathon has grown to over 100 cities and with a global reach in the millions. Climathon is supported by EIT Climate-KIC, a body of the European Union.

The Global Climathon Day happens simultaneously in cities around the world the last weekend of October since 2016. This year, around 130 cities took part at the hackathon from more than 50 countries around the world.

The 4th edition of Climathon Venice has been organized by the Foundation Euro-Mediterrenean Centre on Climate Change, Venice International University (VIU) and Venice Calls and took place at premises of VIU, in the San Servolo Island of Venice. The 2019 edition focused on the challenge on sustainable mobility in Venice and in how to develop solutions in order to boost sustainable transportation of people and goods via water, in a such peculiar territory. The hackathon involved 14 participants formed three groups and were from academia and the business sector. The event opened in the morning with a general framework from local administrations, enterprises and citizens of how the transport of good and people is managed by local administrations, followed by innovative examples of innovative ideas and projects that can boost climate sustainability and improve the understanding of climate hazards, such as climate services. Venice has changed continuously its own mobility system, and it still is in evolution. The city and its lagoon have always imported and developed the newest and most advanced solutions to enhance the efficiency of the transportations. New technologies are entering now in the lagoon envisioning a cohesive overall strategy for the present and the future and implement specific innovative projects to make the vision a reality.

The afternoon was devoted to group work and the development of the idea where the three groups had to imagine the future of mobility in the city of Venice and its lagoon through innovative projects for the transport of people and goods, considering the strong connection between islands, cities, the lagoon, rivers and the sea. Venice is so emblematic in this global challenge because in its territories we can see each possible environment for mobility: from rivers to streets, from the mainland to islands, from the seaside to the lagoon. The transportation of goods must deal with it, knowing that besides other locations each logistic path has one more mandatory stage: the boat. How can the city of Venice diminish the environmental footprint of each transportation? How can the city enhance the efficiency of the industry through innovative projects?

The winner solution “Young and green” aims to drastically decrease the number of boats dedicated to the transport of goods. The idea is to connect transport companies and private citizens to each other so that they can offer free space to transport goods. The boat that has free space for transport will offer this space thus avoiding it moving at half load. By doing so, more transport can be performed in a single trip. This results in fewer boats and less pollution.

Innovation is a powerful tool to address climate change and fast-track the decarbonisation of cities. Overall, Climathon was a chance to introduce CLARA services to potential end-users (local authorities from Venice) and to inspire the participants during group work.
